Reminder - AFAP EA Survey

A reminder that the AFAP EA survey is still open and will close next Wednesday, 26th March. Engagement so far has been excellent, but the more responses we collect, the stronger our position in upcoming negotiations.

If you haven’t already, please take some time to complete the survey using the link below:

Your feedback is crucial in shaping the JPF’s log of claims and ensuring we focus on the key improvements that matter most to members. We encourage you to provide as much detail as possible in the open-text questions—all responses remain strictly confidential.

Thank you for taking the time to have your say!

AFAP Telegram Chat

As outlined in our recent update, the AFAP JPF is launching a members only Telegram chat to facilitate constructive discussions and questions related to the 2025 EA. This platform will provide members with a space to engage in meaningful conversation, with JPF committee members actively monitoring and responding to questions/posts.

With many new Jetstar pilots experiencing their first EA bargaining campaign, we want to encourage all members to ask questions freely, without fear of criticism or dismissal. Our goal is to create an open and supportive space where all contributions are valued, and members can stay informed throughout the negotiation process.

We recognise that social media discussions can sometimes become unstructured or unproductive. To maintain a respectful and focused environment, we will be implementing a basic set of rules, which will be pinned in the Telegram chat for reference and are outlined below.

AFAP JPF Telegram Rule Set:

1. AFAP Membership Requirement

  • Participation in this chat is strictly limited to current AFAP members.
  • Non-members will be removed from the group.

2. Real Names Only – No Anonymous Accounts

  • All users must register using their full name.
  • Anonymous profiles, pseudonyms, or aliases are not permitted.

3. EA Pilots Only

  • This forum is for pilots who are covered by the EA.
  • Management (MMT) pilots listed on the Seniority List are not eligible to participate.

4. Respectful & Professional Conduct

  • Discussions must remain respectful, courteous, and professional.
  • Healthy debate is encouraged, but disruptive, inflammatory, or unprofessional behaviour will not be tolerated.

5. Zero Tolerance for Personal Attacks

  • Personal attacks of any kind are strictly prohibited.
  • A strict "No BS Policy" will be enforced.

6. Admin Oversight & Moderation

  • The group is actively monitored by JPF Administrators.
  • Inappropriate or rule-violating posts will be removed at Admin discretion.

7. Warning & Removal Policy

  • A user violating these rules will receive a formal warning from the Admin team.
  • A second violation will result in removal from the group

Please note that posting permission for participants (except administrators) will not be activated until after this initial 2-week period.

Highline OPT In

If you started at Jetstar after 30 April 2024, you would not have had the opportunity to opt in for Highline.

Highline is an opportunity to increase your salary by approximately 9-12% through the payment of additional allowances when you go to work (100% duty highline and 50% layover highline). These allowances are outline in clause 40.8.3 of the EA.

If you would like to transition to highline you must opt in via the JEN form (instructions below) by 30 April 2025, for highline to commence from 1 July this year.

Please note that highline pilots are subject to the following provisions of the EA which are additional efficiencies for Jetstar:

  • 8 AVAIL days per Calander year (clause 46.12)
  • Jetstar may flex you down to 9 DDOs in two months, with no reduction in your annual DDO count (132 Days) (clause 46.6)
  • 50% of the Company Performance Bonus (CPB) (clause 43.2.2)

How to Opt In?

The opt-in form is now live on JEN.

To access it: JEN Home Page → Pilots → Forms → Highline Pilot Allowance (OPT-IN Only)

International Assistance for AFAP Members Overseas

With many new pilots joining Jetstar and the AFAP in recent years, there has been some confusion about whether the AFAP provides support to Jetstar members flying overseas.

The answer is a resounding YES.

The AFAP is a founding member of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA), a global organisation representing over 100,000 pilots worldwide. We have a long history of contribution dating back to IFALPA’s inauguration on 7 April 1949. Through this membership, AFAP pilots benefit from a strong international network, ensuring support and advocacy beyond Australian borders.

For pilots flying internationally, IFALPA provides critical assistance and resources, including:

  • Accident & Incident Response – In the event of an accident or serious incident overseas, IFALPA’s network ensures pilots receive professional and legal support, while AFAP remains in close contact to provide further assistance.
  • Pilot Representation & Legal Support – If you encounter any legal, operational, or safety issues while overseas, IFALPA-affiliated pilot associations in other countries can provide direct assistance and guidance.
  • Detention & Security Support – In cases of detention, incident investigations, or security concerns, IFALPA can coordinate with local pilot groups and authorities to ensure proper representation and a fair process.

By being part of IFALPA, AFAP members have access to a global safety net, ensuring they are never alone when operating internationally. If you require assistance while abroad, AFAP can facilitate support through IFALPA’s extensive network of pilot unions and representatives worldwide.

We note the arrangement for international pilot support is reciprocal. When pilots from IFALPA member pilot unions have an accident or incident in Australia, their pilot union reaches out to the AFAP and we provide support to their member in Australia. This has included attending ATSB and CASA interviews with the foreign crew and arranging legal representation for court hearings in Australia.

24/7 Emergency Incident Hotline

Members are also reminded of AFAP’s 24/7 accident and incident emergency hotline. The AFAP provides 24/7 support and representation to members in the event of a local or international accident or incident.

The AFAP can provide representation at any post-incident inquiry. Industrial/legal representatives are available to accompany you to interviews conducted by your employer, the Australian Transport & Safety Bureau (ATSB) and/or Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Through the AFAP’s affiliation with IFALPA our members have access to on the ground support provided by IFALPA organisations in overseas ports.

In the event of a local or international accident or incident, members should follow the checklist below:

  • Ensure welfare of yourself, passengers and crew.
  • When able, contact the AFAP hotline on +61 459 747 757. It is important to keep the AFAP in the loop early. Seek advice on any written report you are required to submit and counsel on next steps.
  • Comply with DAMP. Operators will require DAMP testing as per their DAMP program. Once informed of the requirement to undergo a DAMP test, do not leave premises until the test has been conducted, unless otherwise advised. If you are not informed of a requirement to DAMP test, you should advise the Company of your intention to leave the airport.
  • Comply with reporting obligations. Refer to Company manuals and your requirements to report to the ATSB. AFAP legal can assist with written reports and understanding your requirements.
  • See a doctor. You are encouraged to seek medical attention, even if you are not physically injured – you may be in a state of shock.
  • Call AFAP Member Assistance Program (MAP) for free and confidential counselling on 1300 307 912.

If you have any questions, your pilot representatives are available to assist. Alternatively, you can contact your AFAP industrial officers Deanna Cain, Pat Larkins or Andrew Molnar via email deanna@afap.org.au, patrick@afap.org.au, or andrew@afap.org.au or call (03) 9928 5737.
