S&T have been sending the link for the Safety Occurrence Guide to pilots post-performance or safety events. When a safety or performance event occurs, for most pilots it is the first time and not something covered necessarily in training. As the AFAP support pilots through the safety and remedial training process, we have knowledge on what to expect and this is contained within the Safety Occurrence Guide. Feedback is that it has been very useful in aiding understanding of the processes and as an aide to prepare the pilot for a my expeditious return to the line.

It is a public document, and members are encouraged to share it with any pilots that find themselves in a performance or safety event situation.

Safety and performance event support

All details of support provided by AFAP is kept confidential, however we thought it useful to share overall numbers. As an example, over the last 3 months, the Safety and Technical team have supported around 20 pilot members in various capacities with additional support from the Industrial team. It is normal for the Industrial team to refer pilots to S&T (who are all pilots themselves) and serve as another pathway to manage which can be a stressful time. We always recommend pilots call the AFAP sooner so that support is explained from the outset. The AFAP stresses that a call to the AFAP does not mean you need to take all the advice, simply calling to understand the process can prevent unnecessary stress. Every step is entirely up to the pilot to decide what support they prefer.

Pilots that call the AFAP sooner manage the process of return to the line better.
